Project Overview
The goal of the Play group is to create an environment that promotes public interaction though “playful” activity. We want to encourage learning in a way that can bring people together and prove to be fun. We intend to do this with our project idea: Learning Boston through Demolition (working title).
Idea
The idea of this project is to construct a miniature city of Boston within the space of Government Center. Building models that will be fabricated will be approximately “avatar sized” in height and will take the appearance of buildings in Boston (Prudential, Hancock, State House, etc.). The area would be a no fly zone, forcing avatars to walk through the streets of Boston. The purpose of building a mini map of Boston is to create a game in the style of a scavenger hunt.
Avatars would begin from the Boston Common, from which they would be given a clue as to which Boston landmark to visit. When the avatar finds the correct location, the place or location will ask a trivia question, based on Boston history and lore. If the avatar answers the question correctly, it will then be given the option to destroy said landmark, through whichever fiery means we can manage to code. The game goes on till all buildings have been destroyed, at which point the game will reset itself.
Intent
The purpose of this is to provide a way to make historical information easily accessible, while at the same time having fun. The destruction factor gives the user a reason to play the game, while at the same time can benefit from the information being provided. Interaction can be encouraged by avatars helping others in answering trivia questions, helping the learning process and providing a means for social networking.
